National Cheshire Services in Kenya

There are three Cheshire Services in Kenya, providing residential care, community outreach projects and vocational training, and a pioneering inclusive education project.

Projects

Inlusive education

The Oriang Cheshire Home provides a term-time hostel for 20 children with disabilities who receive formal education from the nearby public schools. Since 2001, we have been working with the home to pilot the first ever project on inclusive education in Kenya in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE).

Economic Empowerment

As part of a national programme, the Limuru Cheshire Home offers two-year vocational training courses in tailoring and knitting. At the end of their course the participants take a government trade test, recieve a qualification and are provided with the necessary equipment and materials to establish their own business.

In addition to this, the home provides computer and business skills training for young disabled women as well as giving them additional skills in food preparation and cultivation which will enable them be more self-reliant in their rural homes.

Health and rehabilitation

The Limuru Cheshire Home provides accommodation and rehabilitation services to 32 young disabled women aged between 12 and 25 years.

Community-based support

The Kariobangi Cheshire Home is situated close to Nairobi ’s Mathare Valley slum, and cares for local older people who do not have family support. It also operates as a day care centre for other older people from the surrounding community, and for people with leprosy or post polio paralysis. Twice a week visually impaired people attend for a meal, medical attention, companionship and other social activities organised by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa who manage the home.
