Young Voices Speak out on Community Radio

Gurston Opar and Magdalene Wanyoike, young voice participants from Nairobi went on air on Pamoja FM radio to share the young voices global statement that was developed by 19 young voice members in Johannesburg, South Africa in February 2010.

Pamoja FM is a community radio station based in the Kibera informal settlement area and caters to young and old alike. Gurston and Maggie highlighted issues that affect people with disabilities, especially youth, such as access to education and employment, difficulties in accessing information on reproductive and sexual health in accessible formats and also getting around the city due to an unfriendly transport system. The young voices also informed the listeners on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which was ratified by the Kenyan government on 19th may 2008. The Young Voices are calling for the complete domestication and implementation of the UNCRPD so that persons with disabilities in Kenya can enjoy their rights as enshrined in the convention.
