National Cheshire Services in Rwanda
There is one Cheshire Service in Rwanda, based in the Rususa Parish in the Muramba area in the West. Its activity started in two parishes, Muramba and Rususa but within its first year of implementation had expanded to five Parishes. The MCS Board is supported by a national coordinator and has two additional staff members in charge of health care and education.
Children with disabilities and their peers meet on weekends for sporting activities such as volleyball, football and athletics. In each sport they have formed inclusive teams. In the 2007 Special Olympics held in China, Francoise Uwiragiye, a 10 year old service user, won gold medals in the 50m and long jump events.
Projects
Education
The inclusive education project works in two primary schools in Muramba. The main focus is placed on changing teachers' and students' attitudes to disability to reduce stigma and discrimination. During the first year of the project the Cheshire Service has worked with the students to form inclusive sport teams in football, volleyball and athletics.
Vocational training
The vocational training project, based in Rususa, trains disabled women in sewing, knitting and hairdressing. This project has also engaged disabled people in sporting activities.
