Mother holding baby awaiting rehabiltation servicesThere are two National Cheshire Services in Sudan: in Khartoum in the North and in Juba in the South. They provide both residential care and outreach and community-based rehabilitation programmes. The services cover needy areas and refugee camps and offer physiotherapy, orthopedic workshops, surgery, and educational and creative activities such as handicrafts.

The services work in conjuction with a number of partners including the Christoffel Blinden Mission, the Broader Horizon Institute in Atbara Sudan North, and the Western Sudan Union of the Disabled.

Projects

Inclusive Education

The Juba Cheshire Service runs a pilot inclusive education project within local schools in a bid to mainstream schooling for students with disabilities.

Economic empowerment

The Juba Cheshire Service runs a vocational skills training facility that specifically supports young disabled people in apprenticeship schemes. A resource and training centre is planned in which the service will work with economic development organisations to continue this service. It also plans to deliver training to NGOs and displaced peoples' organisations, as well as self advocacy groups based in the south to increase their awareness of empowerment opportunities.

Health and rehabilitation

The Khartoum Cheshire Home provides short term accommodation for up to 50 children who receive surgical treatment and then undergo physiotherapy. Trained staff and volunteers work with the children and their families providing a range of services including support and the provision of mobility aids.

Walking aids and other orthopaedic equipment are made in the workshop using locally available materials. Training for health professionals in new treatments for children with clubfoot is also offered.

Community-based support

The Khartoum Cheshire Home has 21 volunteer community-based outreach fieldworkers who work particularly in the Internally Displaced Persons' camps. They work closely with families ensuring that disabled children are receiving the appropriate support and attending school, as well as identifying other disabled children in the camps.
